How Often Should I Schedule Air Duct Cleaning?

The air ducts in your home carry conditioned air to every room of your home. These ducts operate most efficiently when they are clean.

The general standard for air duct cleaning is to have it done every three to five years, though certain methods of cleaning can extend the time between cleanings even longer. Regular air duct cleaning helps to prevent the buildup of mold and other pollutants, and makes it easier for your HVAC system to operate efficiently.

You might be surprised to learn that indoor air is often significantly more polluted than outdoor air. As long as the dirt and debris causing that impurity remains in your home, it will continue to be recycled through the ductwork and affect the breathing of anyone in your household. This is why it’s important to perform regular air duct cleanings—so you don’t have to worry about breathing in the same gunk over and over again.

Aside from going by that three- to five-year standard, here are some circumstances in which you might consider scheduling an air duct cleaning appointment with a professional:

  • You see or smell mold: Mold thrives in damp, dark places that are out of reach in your home. Air ducts often contain the exact environmental conditions necessary for mold to grow. If you see signs of mold or smell the mustiness often associated with it, you should consider having your ductwork inspected and cleaned, especially if that smell is stronger while air is blowing through the system. If you experience symptoms such as regular coughing, sneezing or itching while you’re inside, this is a sign the problem is more extensive.
  • Excessive dust and debris: Over time, you can expect dust, dead skin cells, pet dander and other debris and allergens to build up inside your ductwork. Even if you regularly change your filters, this is just a natural result of forcing air through the system. When the problem gets particularly severe, it could even manifest in the form of dust clouds showing up in your home. This can cause or worsen respiratory health conditions, so get your ductwork inspected and cleaned when this issue appears.
  • Pest problems: The dark, out-of-the-way nature of air ducts also makes them an ideal place for all types of pests to make their homes. If you’ve noticed signs of pests in or around your ductwork, such as skins, droppings or actual living (or dead) pests, get a cleaning scheduled as soon as possible, as this will eradicate the problem and sanitize your systems.
  • Major changes to your home: If you’ve performed any recent remodeling projects, there’s a good chance dust and debris have settled in your air ducts. Sawdust, drywall dust, smells of paint or finish and other types of substances can all get trapped inside the ductwork and worsen your air quality. Schedule an air duct cleaning appointment at the end of your project to get your indoor air quality back up to par.
